View Full Version : Leather Treatment, what's good?

What is the best way to treat leather to preserve it and maintain it's suppleness. Not looking for anything to break in a glove, but for an already broken in glove.
I used some shaving cream that has fatty esters in it (not any lanolin), but I wonder if it really does any good, other than making the glove stink like lime.
Also my glove has smoke smell from being stored in a smokers house. Presumably that smoke is not good for leather, but effect likely not significant.
What about petroleum jelly?
Anything else work?

I always use the Wilson Glove Conditioner in the can. The oils treat and soften the leather, which helps the break in of the glove. They also protect the glove from dirt and sun. I have brought some gloves back from almost being dead although they did take 4+ treatments.

I did not see the Wilson product at the sporting goods store. They had a Franklin product that has neatsfoot oil. Reading about it and searching the net, I concluded that lanolin would be the best treatment. I got some pure lanolin and worked it into the glove all over, very small amounts, then left it sit. Next day, you can't tell that anything was even put on the glove, but it smells better, more like leather, less like smoke and lime shavig cream.

I've tried a bunch of things, and my favorites so far are:
Obenauf's Leather Oil (http://www.obenaufs.com/oil.php?osCsid=18f6b3b16f88c57bf868ab6e902f77c0)
Pecard Baseball Glove Dressing (http://www.pecard.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=Pecard&Product_Code=PBD2-5&Category_Code=)
Glove Stuff (http://www.sandalady.com/#glovestuff)
These days I mostly use Pecard over the winter and Obenauf during the season.

My company, Kelley Athletic, sells a product that is a combination of synthetic and natural fats - we call it Glovolution. Basically, it replaces the fats that are lost out of the leather. Another great product, that is not ours, is Lexol.
