I like that my glove folds relatively flat when not in use, but others want theirs to remain open and get upset if anyone does anything that may flatten it. Does it matter?

Yes! It does matter. A lot of gloves are not designed well enough to keep their pocket - thus, there is a natural pancake effect. But for the elite gloves, you should try to maintain the opening. If you really look closely at gloves that are open vs. ones that have "pancaked" or "flattened"... you will notice that the open gloves have more catching surface still available. In other words, the width of the pocket is maintained and you have a bigger catching surface. In addition, gloves that flatten tend to get a weak outter edge - which can cause the ball to hit the edge and bounce out.
